“Well, we ought to be able to overtake them before they reach Riyadh, shouldn’t we?”

“I don’t know,” said Mathy. “Those tripods can go about thirty kilometers an hour on level ground, I’m told. If they kept moving without a pause, they could have almost reached Kuwait by now.”

“Well, all we can do is try to catch up.”

“Yes, we can try.”

Instead of drifting as they usually did at night, the zeppelin kept its engines running and went northeast at its top speed. The desert below has utterly dark until the moon came up around midnight, which turned the dunes into a silvery seascape of amazing beauty.

“I’ve spent years in the desert,” said Lawrence, looking out beside Serno, “but I’ve never seen it from this angle.”

“Your German is very good,” said Serno. “Where did you learn?”

“Oh, at university. I know German, French, Latin, Greek; seem to have a knack for languages. I was planning to be an archeologist before the war.”

“Really? I’ll have to have you meet my aide when we get back. That was his goal, too.”

“You don’t say! What’s his name?”

“Wulzinger, Carl Wulzinger.”
